When people are trying to pursue their careers, there are a lot of occasions where others will tell them that their ambitions are misguided, even foolish. If you've ever tried to pursue something outside of a typical business, you may have been on the receiving end of this kind of response. Perhaps you've been told that your career dreams were "unrealistic" or that you're looking to get into the kind of industry where your chances of success are incredibly low. These are all incredibly common responses to many different career paths, and they can be deeply discouraging, to the point where many people end up giving up on their chosen career because of them. Of course, that begs the question: are these "impossible careers" really that difficult? Is it impossible to make a career doing something that you really want or is it just that many people end up crumbling because of the challenge that they present? To help figure that out, here are some of the most common careers that people might try and steer you away from and whether or not they're as impossible as they might seem.
If ever there was an industry that seemed more impenetrable than any other, it's the music industry. The idea of pursuing music as a career is something that is used as a punchline to a joke more often than not. Whether it's in Films, TV shows, or just in everyday conversation, people who pursue music are often painted as dreamers with no real idea of how the world works. Of course, if that were actually accurate then the entire music industry would have collapsed by now. The truth is that there are plenty of ways to make it in the music industry, it's just a matter of understanding what you really want. After all, being a rock star isn't the only option out there. There's teaching, production, promotion, and plenty of other career opportunities available for those who are willing to put in the work. Of course, if you wanted to make a career out of being a performer then that's not impossible either. You'll be facing a great deal of competition that might well make your life much more difficult than if you pursued a simpler career, but there are plenty of resources online that can help you figure out everything from how to send music to record companies to how to build your band website. Get ready for a long and winding path ahead of you, but if you really think you've got what it takes, there's no reason that you shouldn't pursue your goals.
The stereotype of the penniless writer is one that's been around for centuries. Sure, there's a certain sense of romance to it but in reality, that kind of life isn't especially fun or romantic. However, it's entirely possible to make a career as a writer, you've just got to be willing to adjust your expectations to a certain degree. For one thing, don't expect to write something and then get immediately snatched up by a publisher. The reality of being a writer is that most of your time will be spent getting rejected. If you're not ready to face rejection after rejection, then you're really not ready to be a writer. Not only that but you may have to write about things that aren't exactly what you hoped for. Many writers work on a freelance basis and help other people and companies improve the writing for their website, business, book, or anything else. Sure, that doesn't sound too glamorous, but it puts food on the table and allows you to start working towards being able to write about the things you have a genuine passion for.
Everyone's dreamed of being up on the silver screen at one point in their life, but for most of us, it is just going to be a fantasy. However, if that's a career that you want to pursue then the first thing you have to think about is what exactly you want to do. Are you looking to become an actor? A director? Do you want to work in special effects and makeup? There are so many different roles in the world of film and filmmaking that just about any skill set can come in useful. It's just a matter of figuring out your niche and pursuing it as much as you can. One of the best things that you can do is to try and get involved with your local filmmaking scene. If you live in a city, then there are almost certainly things like local film festivals that you can attend to make connections with other aspiring filmmakers.
This one is a little different from the others since, instead of people writing it off as a pipe dream, many people are discouraged from working in medicine by the sheer amount of work that's involved. If you want to work any role in medicine, then you're going to need to have some pretty hefty qualifications. Working as a doctor is going to require at least a PhD and many other roles call for a Master’s or at least a Bachelor’s degree. If you're not willing to put years of your life into the level of schooling that working in the medical industry requires, then it might be time to find something else instead. Of course, if you are driven and committed enough, then you shouldn't let anything stand in your way.
Of course, it's important to remember that, even armed with the knowledge of just how to properly pursue your chosen career, you're still going to be faced with a lot of challenges and knock-backs. These kinds of things might even be so severe that you come to question if you're even making the right decision at all. The important thing to remember is that no one ever got what they wanted by giving up. When it all comes down to it, the only real difference between those who fail and those who succeed is a willingness to get back up again after you've been knocked down.
